                                                               i.      Careful with sectarian thinking

1.      Careful with identifying with words as coming closer to Scripture and being right.

                                                               i.      When he shows up: the victors crown will be given

1.      to the Elders

2.      a crown of glory

3.      athletes run for corruptible, we for an incorruptible crown

a.       will not tarnish on a shelf

                                                             ii.      Not automatic

1.      Elders who rule well

a.       Not by constraint in the position but willingly

b.      Not for money

c.       Not for power

    1. A Tale of Two Kings (2 Sam 5)

                                                               i.      One ended up with a crown of glory and one far different

1.      The gaining of the crown wasn’t automatic

2.      David (2 Sam 5:2)

a.       Becoming a shepherd of the people

b.      Amos 7:15 The Lord took me from following the flock

                                                                                                                                       i.      There is a leading aspect which can be misleading

                                                                                                                                     ii.      But here is a person who follows the flock—overseeing what the flock is doing and making sure everything is all right

1.      Too often elders see themselves as administrators trying to make assemblies grow.

a.       His head is cut off of his body

                                                             ii.      The Pressures of Governing God’s people

1.      The pressure of circumstances

                                                                                                                                       i.      (v5) The Enemy, innumerable, poised to attack the people of God

                                                                                                                                     ii.      (v6) God’s people are afraid

1.      The people are scattered

2.      (v7) Some people cross the sea

3.      (v8)The Few are shaking at his side

                                                                                                                                    iii.      (v9-10) Disobeys the word of God

1.      In pagan thinking, he offers a sacrifice

2.      (v11) Because of the circumstances I disobeyed

a.       He wasn’t being evil for evil’s sake

b.      He felt justified to do things different because of circumstances (v12)

c.       Seems a very small violation

3.      (v13-14) Extremely important to God

4.      Good motives and circumstances does not overrule God’s word

b.      David 1 Sam 23

                                                                                                                                       i.      (v1) The Enemy has been attacking

1.      (v2) Might seem logical to smite the enemy but David asks God first

a.       A man who is to lead others must be led first—by God

                                                                                                                                                                                                               i.      Make sure its not some idea that’s working here and you’re appropriating it

                                                                                                                                     ii.      (v3) God’s People are afraid

1.      (v5) Checks with God again

a.       He’s ensured and attacks with success

                                                                                                                                    iii.      (v7) Saul rumored to attack the whole city

1.      David checks with God again (10,11)

a.       Will Saul come? (yes)

b.      Will they deliver me? (yes)

c.       Keeps one step ahead of the enemy by taking his directions from God and not circumstances

c.       The servant doesn’t focus on circumstances to the neglect of the Word of God

                                                            iii.      The Pressure of Time

1.      Saul (1 Sam 14)

a.       (v15-17) Noise due to God with Jonathan and servant over there. War time. People afraid. Bad circumstance

b.      (v18) Saul seeks council from God via the Ark

c.       (v19) Withdraw your hand

                                                                                                                                       i.      Backs off from waiting for an answer

                                                                                                                                     ii.      Putting God on a time table

d.      (v24) Marshalls the army and comes up with a rule

                                                                                                                                       i.      No man shall eat until Saul is avenged

                                                                                                                                     ii.      He is lording it over his flock

                                                                                                                                    iii.      Loose canons:

1.      You don’t obey my rule there is a penalty

                                                                                                                                   iv.      There were some good results but it wasn’t the great results (v29-30)

1.      The man made rule restricted them

2.      David (1 Sam 30)

a.       (v1,2) The enemy comes in, takes your wives and children away

                                                                                                                                       i.      You can catch them! You can go now!

b.      (v3) David and people were broken hearted

                                                                                                                                       i.      (v4) People were distressed—extremely bad circumstances

1.      Their families are devastated and the people have lost their confidence

c.       (v6) David encouraged himself

d.      (v7-8) David asks for the ephod and waits for an answer

                                                                                                                                       i.      God tells him to go and overtake them

3.      Good men could make horrible decisions because of the pressures of time then go off to make man made rules.

    1. The Pressure of People

                                                               i.      Saul (1 Sam 15:24)

1.      I sinned because I feared the people and obeyed their voice

a.       Your strength becomes your weakness when you submit to peer pressure.

b.      Prov 21:29 The fear of man brings regret

                                                                                                                                       i.      We must care more about offending God than men

                                                             ii.      David (1 Sam 26)

1.      (v7-8) Loyal people, looking at the circumstance and giving God credit for it—then applying pressure

a.       You’ll have the crown if I kill him now

2.      (v9) David stands on a principle

a.       God put him in power, I don’t have authority to take him out of power (v10-11)

    1. The Commentary and the Crown

                                                               i.      Summary of Life

1.      History

a.       Saul “I have played the fool and have committed serious error” (1 sam 26:21

b.      David crowned with the victor’s crown of Glory

2.      The Day of Christ (Phil 2:16-17)

a.       Col 1:27-29 Just being saved wasn’t good enough but there was a hope of glory to present every man perfect in Christ Jesus

b.      1 Thes 2:19,20 “Who is our crown of glory?”

                                                                                                                                       i.      The people you are shepherding and when we see them in they’re completed form we see them and rejoice

c.       2 Thes 1:10, 12 When He shall be glorified in (not by) His saints

                                                                                                                                       i.      The carpenter who makes the finished product is glorified when people see the work and say “ah, what a great carpenter

d.      2 Thes 2:14 The obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ

                                                                                                                                       i.      So, lets be faithful now—hold his words by the traditions you were taught by word or mouth
