Outline Notes below but real notes to come.

Randy Amos

  1. Faithfulness to the Gospel (1 Cor 1:17)
    1. Introduction

                                                               i.      Level 1: The Preaching of the Gospel to the World (Mark 15:16)

1.      The gospel proclaimed to the world

ii.      Level 2: The Truth of the Gospel with believers action

1.      The Truth of the Gospel continuing with believers

2.      (Gal 2:5, 12, 14) A separation that was not of God—not according to the truth of the Gospel

a.       His talk wasn’t wrong…it was his walk that wasn’t in accordance to it

b.      His actions did not reflect the gospel

iii.      Level 3: The Gospel Portrayed in the church actions (Cor)

1.      Paul brings the gospel to bear on each problem within that church

a.       Section 1: Division vs. Christ’s unified mind—a unanimity of truth and ideology (1 Cor 1:110-11)

                                                                                                                                       i.      Within the same mind and same judgment

b.      Section 2: Moral error vs. Christ is our Passover (1 Cor 5 )

2.      The wisdom by which the church is to function is the Gospel

a.       In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 1)

b.      Confidence in human wisdom is incompatible with the human gospel.

                                                                                                                                       i.      Not based on the wisdom of words.

ii.      Not technically on the blood of Christ but the cross of Christ

1.      The preaching of the cross is also for those being saved

  1.
    1. The Aspect of the Cross

                                                               i.      It was a means of capital punishment

1.      It was where the scum of society went

ii.      There are other ways to die

1.      They tried to stone him

2.      They tried to push him off a cliff

iii.      But it was intentional design for his son to die on the cross

1.      God had an agenda.

a.       Blood aspect: To die for my sins (one aspect)

b.      Cross aspect:

iv.      Cross Aspect: To destroy human reasoning (v.19)

1.      Brought an end on human wisdom and confidence—exactly what the people of Corinth were glorying in.

a.       It is incompatible with the gospel

2.      (v20) He has made foolish the wisdom of the world

3.      (v21) God would save people by the foolishness of preaching

a.       Jews seek signs, Greek seek wisdom; God denies them and presents Christ crucified: foolishness

b.      Careful with deleting this. If you delete Crucified and you just leave Christ, you have his life and not his purpose. Why then even preach Christ? Just preach. If you just preach you realize that it’s all about us…why preach? Just focus on the we and the help we need, and our relationship—but if that’s the case, we can just argue and focus on the But---Contention.

4.      So that your faith relies on the wisdom of God and not the weak wisdom of man

5.      They crucified Jesus in ignorance

a.       They stand face to face with the creator and charged him as a criminal—so much for the wisdom of the world

b.      They made the biggest foolish decision of all

                                                             v.      IE: 1 Sam 17 David and Goliath

1.      David had faith in God and chose a proper weapon (v38)

a.       The choice of weapon is as important as battling the enemy himself

b.      They were deliberately chosen (v40)

c.       The choice of weapon looks foolish (v43)

d.      The choice of weapon was under the name of the Lord (v45)

e.       The whole earth will see the truth (v46)

f.        The assembly will know the truth (v 47)

2.      Application: Can a church function under the Name, the wisdom and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ? Is that powerful although it looks foolish to all?

a.       The world foolishly didn’t know; but the cross is the solution for it is the wisdom of God as portrayed in the church.

  1.
    1. The Authority that comes of the Name of Christ

                                                               i.      We come before the Lord with what authority? (Rev 1:4-6)—we are a kingdom of royal priests

1.      We can speak on his behalf

  1.
    1. The Ability of the Spirit of Christ

                                                               i.      It is what he gives us

1.      We are moved by the Lord

ii.      It is a portrayal of the gospel of Christ

1.      (Gal 3) The Lifestyle of the Church

a.       Christ and the cross exposes us to our worthlessness

b.      The cross has demonstrated that by leaving man as foolish and lifting Christ up as everything.

c.       (3:2) You were saved by faith, eh? Why are you know maintaining your salvation in the flesh (3:3)

                                                                                                                                       i.      Not the lusts of the flesh—but the human ability to secure the promise of God.

ii.      Do you think your perfection is by human ability?

d.      (3:13) Christ has rescued us from the curse of the law by being cursed on the tree

                                                                                                                                       i.      The cross has proved that—he hung on the tree!

2.      The suffering of persecution of the cross (Gal 6:12, 13)

a.       We are hopeless and helpless apart from Jesus

b.      They come up with rules so that they may glory in your flesh

                                                                                                                                       i.      We have heard good exhortations

ii.      There are outward things that God is  concerned about

iii.      We can sometimes go to the externals and make rules of man to make people “holier”

1.      We will fall into the error of “I am holier than that person since I do this thing”

2.      It will cause us to glory in the flesh and boast—“they look like us! They are so holy!”

c.       Go back to the cross!

                                                                                                                                       i.      Self  is useless

1.      I am nothing, he is everything

ii.      The ordinances were blotted out on the cross

iii.      The external isn’t important “Circumcision” vs. “Uncircumcision” –it is a new creation

1.      This is the rule: you are disconnected from the world and are New

a.       Walk by this rule

2.      If you want an outward mark check the marks on your body that reflect the cross

a.       The marks of persecution
