2:5, 12, 14) A separation that was not of God—not according to the truth of the
Gospel
a. His
talk wasn’t wrong…it was his walk that wasn’t in accordance to it
b. His
actions did not reflect the gospel

Level 3: The Gospel Portrayed in the church actions
(Cor)
1. Paul
brings the gospel to bear on each problem within that church
a. Section
1: Division vs. Christ’s unified mind—a unanimity of truth and ideology (1 Cor
1:110-11)
i.
Within the same mind and same judgment
b. Section
2: Moral error vs. Christ is our Passover (1 Cor 5 )
2. The
wisdom by which the church is to function is the Gospel
a. In
whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 1)
b. Confidence
in human wisdom is incompatible with the human gospel.
i.
Not based on the wisdom of words.
ii.
Not technically on the blood of Christ but the cross of
Christ
1. The
preaching of the cross is also for those being saved

Aspect of the Cross
i.
It was a means of capital punishment

was where the scum of society went

There are other ways to die

tried to stone him

tried to push him off a cliff

But it was intentional design for his son to die on the
cross

had an agenda.
a. Blood
aspect: To die for my sins (one aspect)

Cross Aspect: To destroy human reasoning (v.19)
1. Brought
an end on human wisdom and confidence—exactly what the people of Corinth were glorying in.
a. It
is incompatible with the gospel
2. (v20)
He has made foolish the wisdom of the world
3. (v21)
God would save people by the foolishness of preaching
a. Jews
seek signs, Greek seek wisdom; God denies them and presents Christ crucified:
foolishness
b. Careful
with deleting this. If you delete Crucified and you just leave Christ, you have
his life and not his purpose. Why then even preach Christ? Just preach. If you
just preach you realize that it’s all about us…why preach? Just focus on the we
and the help we need, and our relationship—but if that’s the case, we can just
argue and focus on the But---Contention.
4. So
that your faith relies on the wisdom of God and not the weak wisdom of man
5. They
crucified Jesus in ignorance
a. They
stand face to face with the creator and charged him as a criminal—so much for
the wisdom of the world
b. They
made the biggest foolish decision of all
v.
IE: 1 Sam 17 David and Goliath
1. David
had faith in God and chose a proper weapon (v38)
a. The
choice of weapon is as important as battling the enemy himself
b. They
were deliberately chosen (v40)
c. The
choice of weapon looks foolish (v43)
d. The
choice of weapon was under the name of the Lord (v45)
e. The
whole earth will see the truth (v46)
f.
The assembly will know the truth (v 47)
2. Application:
Can a church function under the Name, the wisdom and authority of the Lord
Jesus Christ? Is that powerful although it looks foolish to all?
a. The
world foolishly didn’t know; but the cross is the solution for it is the wisdom
of God as portrayed in the church.

Authority that comes of the Name of Christ
i.
We come before the Lord with what authority? (Rev
1:4-6)—we are a kingdom of royal priests
1. We
can speak on his behalf

- The
Ability of the Spirit of Christ
i.
It is what he gives us
1. We
are moved by the Lord
ii.
It is a portrayal of the gospel of Christ
1. (Gal
3) The Lifestyle of the Church
a. Christ
and the cross exposes us to our worthlessness
b. The
cross has demonstrated that by leaving man as foolish and lifting Christ up as
everything.
c. (3:2)
You were saved by faith, eh? Why are you know maintaining your salvation in the
flesh (3:3)
i.
Not the lusts of the flesh—but the human ability to
secure the promise of God.
ii.
Do you think your perfection is by human ability?
d. (3:13)
Christ has rescued us from the curse of the law by being cursed on the tree
i.
The cross has proved that—he hung on the tree!
2. The
suffering of persecution of the cross (Gal 6:12, 13)
a. We
are hopeless and helpless apart from Jesus
b. They
come up with rules so that they may glory in your flesh
i.
We have heard good exhortations
ii.
There are outward things that God is concerned about
iii.
We can sometimes go to the externals and make rules of
man to make people “holier”
1. We
will fall into the error of “I am holier than that person since I do this
thing”
2. It
will cause us to glory in the flesh and boast—“they look like us! They are so
holy!”
c. Go
back to the cross!

Self is useless

am nothing, he is everything

The ordinances were blotted out on the cross

The external isn’t important “Circumcision” vs.
“Uncircumcision” –it is a new creation

is the rule: you are disconnected from the world and are New

by this rule

you want an outward mark check the marks on your body that reflect the cross

marks of persecution
